Abstract: Do we ever wonder how some students persist and ‘make it through’ their studies despite challenging backgrounds and experiences while at university? This phenomenon takes on particular significance in the context of a society where access to higher education has been and continues to be skewed in favour of particular race and social groupings. The aim of this workshop is to discuss topics in student persistence among senior engineering students at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. "Students Make a Plan: Understanding Student Agency in Constraining Conditions" by Czerniewicza, Willams, and Brown, as well as interview data, will be the occasion for an exchange of ideas about issues of student persistence in different geographical locations where there are similarities in socio-political circumstances, including a history of racialized disadvantage in education.
